58 ALS written to his wife Mary in Massachusetts while in Washington, D.C., first as lobbyist, then as Senator from Nebraska. Most of the correspondence is dated between December 1866 and April 1867. Thayer provides a short description of his work in Congress in each letter, detailing the delays of the vote to override the President's veto against Nebraska's admission. Many of the letters concern Thayer's plans to see Mary, with daily updates of delays in adjournment and the extra session of the Senate in March-April, 1867.
